Does Ashwagandha Actually Improve HRV? What the Science Says
You've probably heard about ashwagandha. It's the adaptogenic herb that shows up in every "how to lower cortisol" article, every wellness podcast, and increasingly, in conversations about heart rate variability. The promise is compelling: an ancient Ayurvedic root that helps your body handle stress better, and that improvement shows up in your HRV numbers.

What ashwagandha is supposed to do
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is classified as an adaptogen — a substance that helps the body adapt to stress and maintain physiological balance. In practice, its primary mechanism appears to be lowering cortisol, your body's main stress hormone.
High cortisol suppresses parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) activity and keeps your sympathetic (fight-or-flight) system revved up. Since HRV reflects the balance between these two branches of your autonomic nervous system, the logic goes: lower cortisol → better autonomic balance → higher HRV.
It's a clean hypothesis. The question is whether the data backs it up.
What the research actually shows
The most relevant study for HRV nerds came out in 2023, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. Researchers gave stressed adults a standardized ashwagandha root extract (Witholytin®) for 12 weeks and measured HRV alongside subjective stress and fatigue scores.
The result? Participants taking ashwagandha showed a statistically significant increase in HRV (p = 0.003) compared to baseline. Fatigue scores dropped. Stress perception improved. But — and this is important — the placebo group's HRV actually declined by 18.8% over the same period, while the ashwagandha group only saw a modest 9.1% increase. The net difference was driven partly by the placebo group getting worse, not just the treatment group getting better.
A 2025 clinical trial using a different formulation (Zenroot™) found significant reductions in perceived stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbance scores over 84 days — but didn't directly measure HRV. The sleep improvements alone could indirectly boost HRV, since better sleep quality is one of the most reliable ways to improve overnight HRV readings.
A larger 2024 meta-analysis on long-term exercise and HRV noted that adaptogenic compounds like ashwagandha "show promise" for enhancing autonomic recovery, but the evidence base is still small. Most studies have fewer than 100 participants and run for 8-12 weeks.

Dose and extract matter. Studies used standardized extracts (typically 5% withanolides) at 300-600 mg/day. Random Amazon powder with unknown potency? Probably not going to move the needle.
It takes time. The studies showing HRV improvements ran for 8-12 weeks. This isn't a "take it tonight, see higher HRV tomorrow" supplement. You need patience and consistent tracking to spot the trend.
Some people feel too flat. Ashwagandha can be almost too good at blunting the stress response. A minority of users report emotional blunting or reduced motivation — anhedonia, technically. If your HRV is going up but you feel checked out, the supplement might be overshooting.
